RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - The collapse of a temporary ramp at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic sailing venue is not expected to affect competition or training during the Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Sunday. The main ramp at the Marina da Gloria, which allows boats to get into the water, was damaged by high tides and big waves on Saturday afternoon, organisers said. The IOC said it was confident the damage would not affect preparations for the sailing competition with repairs to be completed in a few days....

The headquarters of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) on Wednesday reported the leak in Donetsk city in Ukraine’s war-ravaged eastern region. The attack could not be independently confirmed by Newsweek and comes as Ukraine has touted recently successful strikes using U.S.-provided missile systems. An unverified video posted to Twitter showing the aftermath depicts a man covering his face and describing how the air is painful to breathe. The DPR’s territorial defenses said in a Telegram post that the affected area is about 1 1/4 miles and is urging residents to avoid being out on the streets and to not open windows, adding that a woman was killed and another injured by the strike....
The blast reportedly occurred at a military facility in Belgorod region’s Korochansky district on January 14. Belgorod is located near the Ukrainian border and houses several Russian military bases and training grounds. According to Baza, a Russian Telegram channel that regularly posts information about security issues within the country, the explosion occurred at a cultural center re-purposed to house mobilized troops. Russian emergency services told the state-run news agency Interfax that the sergeant accidentally detonated a hand grenade which caused ammunition to blow up and started a fire....

Mutko said on Wednesday the allegations by German public broadcaster ARD/WDR were an attempt to sway a ruling on Russia’s ban from international athletics ahead of the Rio Olympics. The minister also said Russian former anti-doping chief Grigory Rodchenkov, who has spoken widely about his role orchestrating systematic cheating in Russia, was being paid by those who had given him refuge after he left the country. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense published a video on Twitter that appears to show Ukrainian attacks on Russian columns retreating across the Dnieper River. “For every meter of our land—fire!” the ministry wrote as a caption. News aggregator Visegrad 24 said on Twitter that incoming reports say Russian troops are suffering “catastrophic losses” by the river. Newsweek has been unable to independently verify when the footage was taken. Russian troops were ordered on Wednesday to retreat from the western portion of the southern Kherson region in Ukraine....
Human rights group Foundation for Fighting Corruption told AP that police in Russia have arrested more than 180 people for demonstrating, some before protests began. Two of Navalny’s top allies were seized in Moscow after they and other members of his team called for the protests amid Navalny’s hunger strike in the Kremlin prison camp where he was being held. “The situation with Alexei is indeed critical, and so we moved up the day of the mass protests,” Vladimir Ashurkov, a close Navalny ally and executive director of the Foundation for Fighting Corruption, told AP....
