The two were slated to square off in the co-main event to the Jaime Munguia-Patrick Allotey bout in in Carson, Calif. Sparrow was arrested on a warrant for allegedly brandishing a handgun during a domestic dispute in April.
DAZN: Ryan Garcia to Golden Boy: Make the money work and I’ll fight Duno
Garcia (18-0, 15 KOs) called out Sparrow for not appearing at Friday’s weigh-in, but he was not aware at the time of Sparrow’s arrest.
“I just want to know where [Sparrow] is at. He talked a lot, and I don’t see him here,” Garcia said.
Garcia is now without an opponent for Saturday, although he was notified Friday he could be fighting Romero Duno, a potential fill-in for Sparrow. Garcia’s team, though, was adamant about not facing Duno. Eric Gomez, president of Golden Boy Promotions, Garcia’s promoter, tweeted that Garcia’s trainer had concerns.
Garcia, on the other hand, says he is interested in fighting Duno for the right price. DAZN’s Chris Mannix reported Friday night that the 21-year-old fighter told him he is “absolutely willing” to take on Duno. Garcia also made that clear in a profane Instagram post (NSFW language warning).
Duno is already scheduled to fight Saturday night against Ivan Delgado.
